Nvidia Pours $8 Billion Into Europe’s AI Ecosystem as Sovereign Compute Gains Momentum

Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang said that every company will eventually become an AI company, during a visit to Stockholm where he urged Europe to build out its entire AI technology stack, from data centres to applications. Huang told AFP that Nvidia has invested $8 billion in Europe over the past year, with another couple of billion dollars in the pipeline, citing UK data centre and AI cloud provider Nscale and Dutch cloud provider Nebius as strategic investments. His European tour continues with an Nvidia-hosted conference in Berlin.

Sovereign AI compute lands in Sweden

Huang was in Stockholm for the launch of Sferical One, a Swedish supercomputer built on Nvidia chips that is designed to keep sensitive Swedish data and expertise inside the country. The project is a concrete example of the sovereign compute trend that is reshaping European cloud strategy: organisations and governments increasingly want AI workloads, and the data that feeds them, processed on infrastructure they control within EU borders. During the same visit, Volvo Cars announced it is expanding its partnership with Nvidia to improve safety technology in its planned self-driving vehicles.

What this means for European cloud buyers

For European engineering teams, the takeaway is that the AI infrastructure market is changing fast. European providers such as Nebius and Nscale are scaling with backing from Nvidia, and hyperscaler dominance of AI compute is no longer a given. That opens real options for cost, latency and data residency, but it also means architecture decisions made now, which GPU platforms to standardise on, where inference workloads run, how data flows across borders, deserve deliberate review rather than default choices. Teams that treat AI infrastructure as a strategic decision, not just a procurement line, will be better placed when the next wave of regional capacity comes online.
