Amazon plans to invest more than 16 billion euros in Germany in 2027, the company announced at the Invest in Germany Summit hosted by the Federal Government in Berlin on 20 October 2026. The package includes the expansion of data centres and AI infrastructure, high-speed satellite internet through Amazon Leo, new logistics projects across the country and a major new Prime Video production slate. Amazon states it has invested more than 100 billion euros in Germany since 2010, making the country one of its most important markets worldwide.

What it means for European cloud strategy

For engineering leaders in Europe, the interesting part is not the total figure but the direction. Data centre and AI infrastructure expansion in Germany means more regional capacity for training and inference workloads that previously had to run farther away, lower latency for Central European users and easier conversations about data residency. Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Katherina Reiche, explicitly framed high-performance data centres as the foundation of the digital economy and industrial AI.

Practical preparation beats reaction. Organisations that audit their current workloads, map which ones would benefit from AI-capable regional capacity and plan migration paths now will be positioned to use the new capacity early instead of waiting in a queue. It is also a good moment to review cost models, because AI infrastructure spend without a workload strategy tends to become shelfware.
