German hosting provider Hetzner has been awarded gold in the Sovereign Cloud category at the 2026 IT Awards organised by the German IT media group Vogel IT-Medien. The award ceremony took place on 15 October 2026 in Augsburg, and the winner was chosen by reader vote, with 60,000 votes cast across the twelfth edition of the awards. For a company that has built its reputation on plain, reliable and competitively priced server infrastructure rather than marketing, winning a category that did not exist a few years ago says a lot about where the European cloud market is heading.
Why sovereign cloud is winning awards
Hetzner runs its own infrastructure in data centres in Nuremberg, Falkenstein and Helsinki, all certified to ISO/IEC 27001:2022. That means customers can keep their data, applications and IT systems inside the European legal area, under GDPR and European jurisdiction, instead of relying on providers that route data and control through non-European legal systems. Hetzner spokesperson Christian Fitz said the award shows the value users place on independent, secure and high-performance cloud infrastructure, and that it means a great deal because it came directly from the people who work with cloud technologies every day.
The timing matters. European institutions, from the French Cour des comptes to the EU tech sovereignty package, are actively pushing organisations to reduce their dependence on a small group of largely American hyperscalers. Sovereign cloud is no longer a niche demand from regulated industries, it is becoming a default procurement criterion for public sector bodies, healthcare, finance and any business that handles personal data at scale.
What it means for your infrastructure choices
Awards do not replace due diligence. Sovereign cloud still needs sound architecture: hardened firewalls, tested backups, monitored Kubernetes clusters and a plan for patching when the next critical vulnerability lands. Migrating workloads or designing a new environment on a European provider like Hetzner is an excellent opportunity to fix the weaknesses of your current setup at the same time. If you are weighing a move to a European cloud provider, or you already run workloads on Hetzner and want them secured, automated and monitored properly, contact Excello Digital at https://excello.digital/contact/. We design, migrate and operate cloud infrastructure for organisations across Europe and can help you combine sovereignty with real security.
