Source: AWS What’s New
On 16 October 2026 AWS announced the general availability of application code conversion from Azure SDK to AWS SDK in AWS Transform. The feature gives organisations an accelerated path to migrate Microsoft Azure cloud-native .NET applications to AWS, and it signals how AI assisted tooling is reshaping one of the hardest parts of any cloud migration: the actual rewriting of application code.
How the conversion works
The AWS Transform .NET modernization agent identifies Azure service code in submitted source code and converts it to the equivalent AWS service code. An Azure Functions serverless function that uses Azure Cosmos DB, for example, can be converted to an AWS Lambda function that uses Amazon DynamoDB. The service presents the conversion options in an assessment report and modernization plan, which teams can accept or adjust before the modernization runs. AWS Transform then converts the identified Azure service code to equivalent AWS SDK calls and validates that the changes are incorporated into the transformed code.
What converts today
The initial general availability supports conversion of Azure Functions to AWS Lambda, Azure Blob Storage to Amazon S3 and Azure Queue Storage to Amazon SQS, with Azure Cosmos DB to Amazon DynamoDB conversion available in preview. The service is available in eight AWS regions, including Europe (Frankfurt) and Europe (London), which makes it directly usable for European organisations with data residency requirements.
Why it matters for European cloud strategy
For years the real cost of leaving Azure has been the engineering effort of rewriting application code, not the price of compute. Automated code conversion changes that equation, and it arrives at a moment when European organisations are actively reviewing their cloud dependencies, weighing vendor lock-in against migration risk. Whether the goal is a full exit, a multicloud setup or simply a stronger negotiating position at contract renewal, conversion tooling like this turns a multi year rewrite project into a manageable assessment. Migration still needs careful planning around data, security, compliance and testing.
